New District Attorney in Orange County | What it means for anti-trafficking advocates

The result of the latest election unseats Tony Rackauckas and his 20-year tenure as the District Attorney of Orange County. It is to be determined how Todd Spitzer will change the leadership the OCDA to combat human trafficking. In the past, he served as Statewide Chairman of Marsy’s Law to secure victim rights and worked as an OC Deputy and Assistant DA where he claimed to have dealt with cases involving human trafficking.

Reports of Human Trafficking in California Up 842 Percent Since Creation of Hotline

California continues to be a hotspot for human trafficking and in particular, sex trafficking. According to the Washington Examiner, since the creation of the National Human Trafficking Hotline, reported cases of human trafficking, much of which includes sex trafficking, have gone up 842 percent. In a shocking graphic, California dominates other states in prevalence of reported human trafficking cases.

22-Year-Old Human Trafficker Arrested in Irvine, CA

On June 26th, 2018 Joseph Blake Ballard, at only 22 years old, was charged with the felony counts of trafficking, pimping and pandering two women in Irvine, CA. Joseph was caught because one of his victims contacted the Irvine Police Department from a gas station after being kicked out of the hotel room the three were sharing. From there the Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force (OCHTTF) investigated the case and located and arrested Joseph at the hotel.
